During a journey through all the countries of the EU, I visited the exact centre of gravity of
each country and made a 1 m2 mark on this specific place. The markings on the centres are perishable and will be incorporated into nature within a few days or weeks. To emphasise the temporality of the mark and calculations I made a polaroid of each centre and mark.
The centre of gravity is the geographical centre of a flat surface. It is the point on which the
‘flat country’ balances. If you were to cut out the country and balance it on a pencil, there is only one point on which the continent would be in total horizontal balance. The centres of gravity of the EU-member-states are calculated by Het Kadaster, the land measuring authority
in The Netherlands. The calculations are 11 cm accurate.
The following countries are included: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark,Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, LatviaLithuania,Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands,
Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.
